About the service
You should expect to arrive at a clean, well kept, large clinic with ample parking and spacious treatment rooms. You will be faced with friendly and welcoming staff and dedicated, knowledgeable Podiatrists.
Firstly, you will attend an initial general appointment, to discuss your medical history and concerns, and so we can conduct a full assessment and outline the best plan. Should Nail Surgery be deemed suitable, we will book this in into a future slot for 1 hour which is usually with 7 days. We will send you a full information booklet to read prior to your appointment along with a consent form.
The entire procedure usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes, and we have outlined the steps below:
Preparation: You'll be asked to lie comfortably. Your toe will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution to minimise the risk of infection.
Local Anaesthetic: Our podiatrist will inject a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area, ensuring you won't feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel a brief stinging or pressure sensation as the anaesthetic is given, which quickly subsides. The numbness typically lasts for several hours after the surgery.
Anaesthetic Checking: Our podiatrist will test the area to ensure there is no pain at the site. You will feel pressure, pushing and pulling, but you shouldn’t feel pain.
Tourniquet Application: A small, soft tight band will be gently placed around your toe. This temporarily stops blood flow, which helps to keep the area clear and allows your Podiatrist to work precisely, they will then perform the Nail Surgery.
After the surgery, you will be given full detailed aftercare advice, you will be booked in for a free follow up to change the dressing, and given a take home dressing pack too. Recovery is usually quite quick, most patients return to normal activities within days, with healing typically taking a few weeks depending on the procedure.
What to expect
Why might I need Nail Surgery?
Nail surgery is often recommended when non-surgical treatments haven't been successful, or for persistent issues such as:
Ingrowing Toenails: This is the most common reason. It happens when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing significant pain, redness, swelling, and often recurrent infection.
Recurrent Nail Infections: Chronic or repeated infections around the nail that don't respond to antibiotics or other non-surgical treatments.
Painful Nail Conditions: Where a portion of the nail causes ongoing and debilitating pain, for example, due to pressure or deformity.
Traumatic Nail Injuries: In some specific cases, to address severely damaged or deformed nail plates that are causing ongoing problems.
Fungal nails: This is where a fungal nail infection has impacted a significant portion of the nail and is unlikely to respond to conservative treatment. This is the most effective way of giving your nail a good restart to grow normally.
